|Andrew Lutz won his opening match against the #2 seed in the B Singles draw
CAMBRIDGE - Juniors Andrew Lutz (Baltimore, MD) and Ben Barad (San Rafael, CA) of the Tufts men's tennis team defeated opponents from Division I Army while playing at the Harvard Halloween Invite on Friday.
In the B-Draw, Lutz defeated #2 seed Rashad Shelton from Army 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals. Barad won easily (6-0, 6-3) in his round-of-16 match against Army's Roman Cacha.
Both Jumbos lost in the quarterfinal round on Saturday. Lutz was defeated 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 by Brown University's David Neff. Barad was ousted by Brown's Nick Newhouse, 6-1, 6-4.
Sophomores Zach Ladwig (Chelmsford, MA) and Matt Pataro (Coral Gables, FL) also played in the B Singles Draw. Ladwig lost a opening-round match to Army's Pete Williams 6-2, 7-5 and then dropped a consolation match against Army's Chad Llewellyn. Pataro lost to Dartmouth #4 seed Andres Isaza 6-3, 7-5 in the first round and also lost in the consolation 7-5, 7-5 against Amherst's Sean Rodriguez.
Tufts coach Jaime Kenney also had two doubles pairs entered in the tournament. Senior tri-captain Morrie Bossen (Chicago, IL) and sophomore Austin Blau (East Hills, NY) lost to Army's Lewellyn and Joshua Cook 8-5 in the first round. Senior tri-captain Kai Victoria (Miami, FL) and classmate Sam Laber (Cincinnati, OH) were defeated in their opener by Brown's Newhouse and Neff 8-6.
This was the final action of the fall season for Tufts. Their 2011-12 schedule will resume in the spring.
