MIDDLEBURY, VT - The Middlebury College men's tennis team, ranked seventh in the March 15 Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, swept through Tufts for a 9-0 victory in a NESCAC match on Friday afternoon.
After a 3-0 fall season, the loss is the first of the 2011-12 campaign for Tufts, which was playing its spring opener. The Panthers are 5-0 overall.
Middlebury won each of the three doubles matches by 8-4 scores. The pairings for Tufts were juniors Ben Barad (San Rafael, CA) and Andrew Lutz (Baltimore, MD) at #1, junior Mark Westerfield (Menlo Park, CA) and senior co-captain Morrie Bossen (Chicago, IL) at #2 and senior co-captain Sam Laber (Cincinnati, OH) with sophomore Matt Pataro (Coral Gables, FL) at #3.
Middlebury's #1 doubles pair of Andrew Lebovitz and Brantner Jones is ranked 11th nationally, while the second duo of Alec Parower and Derrick Angle is #11.
The Panthers were equally dominant in the singles matches. Sophomore Austin Blau (East Hills, NY) was the only Jumbo to win more than four games in his match, which was a 6-4 and 6-3 loss at #3.
Tufts will now travel to Hilton Head for spring break. Their first match is on Monday against Carleton at 4 pm. Middlebury plays next at Vanguard on Saturday, March 24.
