Men's Tennis Edged by Carleton College 5-4 During Spring Break Trip

Ben Barad had victories in doubles and singles for Tufts

HILTON HEAD, SC - The Tufts men's tennis team was narrowly defeated by Carleton College, 5-4, in their second match of the day on Monday during their spring break trip to Hilton Head.

Tufts, which had shut out Frostburg State earlier in the day, won two out of three doubles matches to take a lead against Carleton. The top Tufts pairing of juniors Ben Barad (San Rafael, CA) and Andrew Lutz (Baltimore, MD) won 8-1, while the #3 duo of senior co-captain Sam Laber (Cincinnati, OH) and sophomore Matt Pataro (Coral Gables, FL) took a much tighter 9-7 win.

Barad was also a winner at #1 singles, taking a second-set tie-breaker to complete the victory. Freshman Brian Tan (Orinda, CA) created bookend wins for Tufts by also winning a second-set tie-breaker to capture the #6 match.

However, Carleton won the second through fifth matches to come-from-behind for the win. Three of the four were in straight sets. Pataro was the lone Jumbo to extend his opponent to three sets after winning the first 6-2.

Tufts fell to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the spring with the loss. They are back in action on Tuesday against College of Coastal Georgia starting at 2 pm.

Carleton College is now 9-1 overall.
