Barad Wins in First Singles, but Men's Tennis Falls 8-1 Against University of Chicago

Ben Barad won the #1 singles match against Chicago

HILTON HEAD, SC - Tufts University junior Ben Barad (San Rafael, CA) won the #1 singles match, but the University of Chicago men's tennis team took all of the other matches to post an 8-1 victory over the Jumbos in Hilton Head on Thursday afternoon.

Chicago had clinched the team victory before the #1 singles match ended. However, Barad was able to provide a highlight for the Jumbos against Chicago's Troy Brinker. Barad won the first set 6-2, but Brinker evened sets at 1-1 with a 6-2 victory in the second. With the team result already decided, the #1 match was determined by a super tie-breaker for the third set and Barad won 10-6.

The Jumbo third doubles duo of senior co-captain Sam Laber (Cincinnati, OH) and sophomore Matt Pataro (Coral Gables, FL) put up a good fight. They went to a tie-breaker with the Chicago pair of Krishna Ravela and Zsolt Szabo before losing 9-8 (5).

Chicago was an easy winner in each of the other seven matches to improve their record to 7-6. The Maroons are ranked 27th nationally. Tufts dropped to a 4-4 record with the loss.

Coach Jaime Kenney's Jumbos finish their spring trip to Hilton Head with a match against Graceland on Friday at 11 am.
