MEDFORD - The Tufts men's tennis team swept through nine doubles and singles matches with relative ease while opening their 2012 home and NESCAC schedule with a 9-0 victory against Connecticut College on Thursday. The match was played indoors at the Gantcher Center due to the cold temperature.
Coach Jaime Kenney's squad got things going with a sweep of the three doubles matches. At #1, junior Andrew Lutz (Baltimore, MD) teamed with sophomore Matt Pataro (Coral Gables, FL) to earn their first-ever win together 8-2. Junior Ben Barad (San Rafael, CA) and senior co-captain Sam Laber (Cincinnati, OH) had to work hardest for their doubles win, succeeding 8-6 at #2. Junior Mark Westerfield (Menlo Park, CA) and senior co-captain Morrie Bossen (Chicago, IL) improved to 4-3 this spring with an 8-3 final in the third match.
In singles play, Barad was the only Jumbo who won in three sets. He came back from a 6-3 loss in the first to win 6-2 and 6-2. Sophomore Austin Blau (East Hills, NJ) allowed just one game to his opponent while winning at #3. Pataro was nearly as dominant, taking a 6-2, 6-0 score in the fifth match.
The win was the second in a row for the Jumbos, who improved to 6-4 overall. Connecticut College dropped to 4-3. Tufts is currently ranked ninth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Northeast Region.
Tufts will host a NESCAC match against Wesleyan on Sunday at 1 pm. The Camels play next also on Sunday at 1 at Springfield College.
