|Junior Andrew Lutz lost just three games in the #2 match
MEDFORD - The Tufts men's tennis team had a 9-0 victory over Wesleyan University on Sunday afternoon at home. Coupled with a 9-0 victory against Connecticut College on Friday, the Jumbos opened their home and NESCAC schedules with an unbeaten weekend.
The Jumbos played solid doubles to take a 3-0 lead against Wesleyan. At #1, junior Andrew Lutz (Baltimore, MD) and sophomore Matt Pataro (Coral Gables, FL) were 8-5 winners. Junior Ben Barad (San Rafael, CA) and senior co-captain Sam Laber (Cincinnati, OH) took the second match 8-4. The #3 pair of junior Mark Westerfield (Menlo Park, CA) and senior co-captain Morrie Bossen (Chicago, IL) won again 8-2.
In singles play, Wesleyan's Jeff Legunn could not continue his match and Barad won at #1 by default. Lutz took a 6-0 first set against Stephen Monk and then closed out the #2 win 6-3. Laber was equally efficient at 6-3, 6-1 in the fourth match. Freshman Brian Tan (Orinda, CA) won his third straight match, 6-4 and 6-1 in sixth singles.
Coach Jaime Kenney's Jumbos have won three in a row overall to improve to 7-4 (2-1 NESCAC). Wesleyan dropped to 12-3 overall and 0-3 in the league.
Tufts continues a four-match homestand on Wednesday when they welcome Division II Merrimack College for a 4 pm start.
