Jumbo Men's Tennis has Good Showing in 7-2 Loss at Top-ranked Amherst College

Austin Blau moved up to #2 in the singles order and won his match

AMHERST - The Tufts men's tennis team lost 7-2 at Amherst in a NESCAC match on Sunday, but equated themselves well in singles play against the #1 team in Divison III.

Amherst won all three doubles matches by 8-4 scores to take a 3-0 lead in the match. In first doubles, Chris Dale and Mark Kahan defeated Jumbos Andrew Lutz (Baltimore, MD) and Matt Pataro (Coral Gables, FL).

In singles, four of the six matches played to three sets. At #1, Amherst's Joey Fritz, the #5 ranked player in the country, faced Jumbo junior Ben Barad (San Rafael, CA). Fritz won the first set 6-2, but Barad evened the match with a 6-4 win in the second. Fritz prevailed 6-3 in the third.

At #2, Tufts sophomore Austin Blau (East Hills, NY) took a 6-2 third set from Eli Mlaver to win the match. In fourth singles, Pataro was down a set after losing to Julian Camacho 6-4 in the first. He battled back to take the match with 6-4 and 6-1 wins. Similarly, Tufts freshman Brian Tan (Orinda, CA) led 1-0 after a 6-1 win in the first, but Amherst's Andrew Scheiner came back with 6-2 and 6-1 victories.

The Lord Jeffs won the other two singles competitions in straight sets.

The Jumbos dropped their third straight match, falling to 8-7 overall and 2-3 in the league. Amherst is now 22-2 overall and 4-0 in NESCAC.

Tufts is at Trinity next on Thursday at 4 pm. Amherst had a match against Skidmore after they played the Jumbos on Sunday at 2 pm.
