Tufts Men's Tennis Stops Four-match Losing Streak With 6-3 Victory Against Brandeis

Austin Blau won #3 singles in straight sets

MEDFORD - Sophomore Matt Pataro (Coral Gables, FL) was part of a #1 doubles win and was victorious in #4 singles to help the Tufts men's tennis team to a 6-3 win over Brandeis University on Monday.

The win stopped a four-match losing streak by the Jumbos and got them back over .500 at 9-8 overall. Brandeis lost for the fifth consecutive outing dropping to 4-12. Tufts was #9 and Brandeis was 10th in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast rankings.

Pataro and junior Andrew Lutz (Baltimore, MD) won 8-6 in the first doubles match, helping the Jumbos earn a 2-1 lead. Tufts' #3 pair of junior Mark Westerfield (Menlo Park, CA) and senior co-captain Morrie Bossen (Chicago, IL) outlasted Alec Siegel and Mike Secular from Brandeis 9-8 (7) to help the Jumbos earn the advantage.

Tufts flexed its depth in singles. Though Brandeis took the top two matches, Tufts won in the third through sixth spots to take the match. Sophomore Austin Blau (East Hills, NY) lost just five games in his #2 win. Freshman #6 Brian Tan (Orinda, CA) was a 6-2, 6-4 winner in the sixth match.

Brandeis' Steve Milo went three sets to win the #1 competition. After Jumbo junior Ben Barad (San Rafael, CA) took the first set 6-2, Milo rallied for 6-2 and 6-4 wins.

Tufts is next in action on Friday for a NESCAC match at Bates beginning at 2 pm. The Judges are in the University Athletic Association Championship starting on Thursday against Washington University.
