MEDFORD - The Tufts men's tennis team capped the 2011-12 season with a hard-fought 6-3 victory against Colby in a NESCAC match played at Voute Courts on Sunday afternoon. Junior Andrew Lutz (Baltimore, MD) and sophomore Matt Pataro (Coral Gables, FL) had doubles and singles wins for the Jumbos.
Tufts came out on top 2-1 in a competitive doubles round. Senior Morrie Bossen (Chicago, IL), who was saluted along with classmate Sam Laber (Cincinnati, OH) on Seniors Day, joined junior Mark Westerfield (Menlo Park, CA) to win a tie-breaker in third doubles. Lutz and Pataro partnered for an 8-5 #1 doubles win. Colby's Robert Yee and Luke Martin kept in close with a 8-6 victory on the second doubles court.
Needing three wins in singles to capture the match, the Jumbos got them from junior #1 Ben Barad (San Rafael, CA), sophomore Austin Blau (East Hills, NY) at #4 and Pataro at #4. Blau lost just three games in his action, while Patro was also strong at 6-2 and 6-4.
Colby's Sam Bachelder and Matthew Mantikas earend straight-set wins at the bottom of the singles order for the visitors.
Tufts finished the season with a 10-9 record overall adn 3-5 in NESCAC. Colby completed the year 12-7 overall and also 3-5 in the conference.
