Softball Winning Streak in Florida Continues with 6-2 Victory Over Wisconsin-Superior

CLERMONT, Fla. – Junior 1B Casey Maggiore and freshman pinch-hitter Alexis Aboulafia both hit two-run doubles to key Tufts University softball's 6-2 win over the University of Wisconsin-Superior in Florida on Friday.

Casey Maggiore hit her sixth double of the week in the game.

Tufts junior starter Gillian O'Connor did not allow a hit through five innings and finished with her third victory. Neither of the runs she allowed was earned and she struck out five while not walking a batter. The Jumbos improved to 11-0 overall.

With the game scoreless going into the bottom of the third, an error by the Yellowjackets and a single by Tufts sophomore 2B Emma Della Volpe set the stage. After senior DH Kristen Caporelli brought home the first run on a fielder's choice, Maggiore followed with a two-run double to left giving Tufts a 3-0 lead.

Superior broke up both a no-hitter and shutout in the fifth. Sophomore 3B Alayna Tulip reached on an error to lead off the frame and eventually scored on a base hit by junior RF Emily Carpenter as the Yellowjackets closed within 3-1.

However, Tufts would score three more times in the bottom of the fifth starting with a one-out double by sophomore SS Mia Steinberg. She scored on an error and then Aboulafia hit her two-run double to make it 6-1.

Three singles by junior pitcher Ashley Taipale, senior 1B Gabby Gidley and Tulip brought home the second Superior run in the sixth.

Della Volpe had two of Tufts' six hits, while Steinberg and Caporelli scored twice. Junior Allison Tilton pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for Tufts.

Taipale took the loss allowing six hits and six runs (four earned) in six innings. She struck out six and did not walk a batter.

The Jumbos play St. Olaf later on Friday. The Yellowjackets (3-14) are also in action later versus Framingham State.
