SCRANTON, PA - Tufts forward Michaela North was dominant down low, posting a double-double with 17 points and 19 rebounds, as the Jumbos advanced to the Elite Eight of the 2016 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament with a 62-49 victory over Albright on Friday evening in Third Round action at the John Long Center.
The Jumbos, now 26-3 on the year, will play host Scranton (30-0) in the Quarterfinals Saturday afternoon beginning at 5 pm with a berth in the Final Four on the line in the contest. Scranton was winners over Christopher Newport in the nightcap Third Round game Friday, 82-46.
Albright ends the year with a 27-3 overall mark.
Offense was tough to come by in the first quarter of the game for both teams, as Albright held a slim 7-6 lead after the first 10 minutes of action. The second period was almost identical to the first for the first five minutes, as Tufts grabbed the lead back at 18-15 with 4:25 left.
Finally, over the final four minutes of the first half, both teams began to find their touch shooting the basketball, as it was Tufts who walked into the locker room for intermission clinging to a 25-24 advantage after Albright nailed two free throws with six seconds left in the period to chop the lead down to one.
The third quarter was just like the first two, a see-saw affair for the majority of action, with the game coming to a head with 2:25 left, as Albright took a 34-33 lead on the Jumbos after a layup by Nina Massarelli.
This would be the last time the rest of the game that Albright led, as Tufts went on a huge 8-0 run to end the quarter and go into the fourth up by seven at 41-34.
The scoring spurt continued for the Jumbos to start the final period, as a quick 6-2 run gave Tufts their first double-digit lead of the night at 47-36 with 6:27 left in regulation. The closest Albright came the rest of the night to the lead was five points (47-42 with 4:29 left), as 7-2 run by the Jumbos there put Tufts in the lead for good at 54-44 with two minutes remaining.
From there, Tufts cruised into a 13-point victory to sew up their third straight Elite Eight berth and fourth overall.
Leading the way was North, who shot 6-of-10 from the floor in the victory and did not miss a free throw (5-of-5). Elsewhere, guard Lauren Dillon had 11 points, while Maura Folliard came off the bench and chipped in with 11 points of her own.
Albright was led in the defeat by center Kelecia Harris, who finished with 15 points.
