Women's Rowing Wins 6 Out of 7 Against Amherst and Smith on Sunday

MEDFORD – For a second straight day, the Tufts University women's rowing team lost just one race as they were winners in six out of seven starts at Malden River on Sunday.

The Jumbos took five out of six on opening day against Trinity and Coast Guard Saturday. With their 6-1 record today in races versus Amherst College and Smith College, the Jumbos won 11 out of 13 races to start the spring season this weekend.

Tufts' third varsity eight started Sunday with a 7:24.7 to 7:30.6 victory over Smith. Winners against Trinity yesterday, the 3V8 then made it a perfect 3-0 weekend with a 7:26.0 to 7:56.4 win over Amherst in their second race on Sunday.

The undefeated third varsity includes coxswain Jordan Sclar, stroke Lindsay Naber, 7 Danielle Kaden, 6 Jiana Schnabel, 5 Miranda Finestone, 4 Karen Dooley, 3 Sophia Carroll, 2 Nina Pittas and bow Gillian Mehigan.

Tufts' second varsity eight was 4-0 for the weekend. On Sunday the Jumbos added a 7:13.1 to 7:24.1 win over Smith and a 7:15.5 to 7:29.9 final against Amherst.

The unbeaten second varsity features coxswain Gabby Borenstein, stroke Sarah Flower, 7 Camden Myles, 6 Miriam Weiss, 5 Alicia Heia, 4 Abby Henne, 3 Laurel Haeger, 2 Madeleine Clarke and bow Sophie Bredenkamp.

Tufts' first varsity eight lost to a strong Smith team in their first race today. The Pioneers are ranked fifth in the most recent USRowing / College Rowing Coaches Association poll (Tufts is seventh). Smith covered the course in 6:43.6 to Tufts' 7:01.4. The Jumbos were able to improve to 2-2 on the season by out-rowing Amherst 7:02.8 to 7:08.3 later on Sunday.

The first varsity boating was coxswain Jill Armenia, stroke Bibi Lichauco, 7 Libby Lichter, 6 Amanda Downing, 5 Grace Duisberg, 4 Lauren Drohosky, 3 Grace Fabrycky, 2 Prairie Hammer and bow Polly Harrington.

Tufts also had a fourth varsity eight victory for the second straight day. Today's eight won 7:45.8 to Amherst's 7:54.3. Coxswain Sarah Toms, stroke Erika Madrian, 7 Eve Devens, 6 Kathryn Luhrman, 5 Emma Worple, 4 Risa Williams, 3 Abby Jupin, 2 Leila Skinner and bow Leslie Spencer were Sunday's 4V8 starters for Tufts.

The Jumbos will host Bates, Wesleyan and Wellesley on the Malden next Saturday.
