MEDFORD - In what has become a unique tradition at Tufts University, 10 members of the Jumbo women's lacrosse team were graduated at an early Commencement ceremony on Thursday morning.
These Jumbos graduated early due to the potential that they will miss the regular Commencement exercises on Sunday. Head coach Courtney Shute's team is hosting an NCAA Regional at Bello Field this weekend (May 18-19) and the Regional final will be played on Sunday.
The 2019 women's lacrosse graduates included Dakota Adamec, Maria Dattolo, Audrey Evers, Cecily Freliech, Courtney Grygiel, Maddy Schwartz, Annie Sullivan, Megan Toner, Hedy Veith and Gabby Vinci.
Tufts University President Anthony P. Monaco presided over the ceremony which took place in the Coolidge Room at Ballou Hall on the Tufts campus. Tufts Trustee John de Jong was also in attendance, along with the graduates' teammates, friends and family. The seniors were dressed in their caps and gowns.
In 2009 when the Tufts softball team was going to miss Commencement while playing at the NCAA Finals in New Jersey, a special ceremony was held for the team's seniors. In the years since, the seniors on each team who would miss Commencement due to away games have been accommodated with this special ceremony.
Tufts Women's Lacrosse hosts The College of New Jersey in the NCAA Championship 3rd Round on Saturday at Bello Field with a 11:30 am start.
