Women's Track & Field Competes at MIT's Final Qualifying Meet Thursday

Senior co-captain Kelsey Tierney ran an 11:14.59 PR in the 3,000 steeplechase.

CAMBRIDGE – Ten members of the Tufts University women's outdoor track & field team competed at MIT's Final Qualifying Meet on Thursday afternoon. The meet was a last opportunity for competitors to hit national qualifying marks to get into the NCAA Championships coming up next week.

Jumbos hit PR's in four events on Thursday. Junior Rhemi Toth had a career-best 2:13.48 in the 800 meters which ranks 25th nationally, on the bubble for an NCAA berth. Last year there were 22 entries in the NCAA 800. Final declarations for NCAA events are due on Friday night, and Toth could move up if anyone ranked ahead of her does not choose to compete in the 8 at NCAA's.

Tufts senior co-captain Kelsey Tierney's 11:14.59 in the 3,000-meter steeplechasae on Thursday at MIT was also a PR which ranks 32nd nationally. NCAA's took 22 last spring. Senior co-captain Evelyn Drake in the hammer throw (160'2" – 48.81m) and freshman Luana Machado in the 400-meter hurdles (1:03.83) recorded PR's at MIT that rank 47th and 44th in D3, respectively.

Also competing individually for Tufts on Thursday was junior Julia Gake in the 400 (58.43), freshman Hannah Neilon in the 4 (59.54), senior Kylene DeSmith in the 100-meter hurdles (14.98), junior Nehalem Kunkle-Read in the 400-meter hurdles (1:09.21) and freshman Chidiebele Ikpeazu in the discus throw (97'7" – 29.75m).

The 4x4 of freshman Tara Lowensohn, Neilon, Machado and Gake also ran, finishing in 4:02.45.

DeSmith is ranked 22nd nationally in the heptathlon with her 4,507 score from the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association meet last week. With 22 individuals qualifying nationally in the multi-event last year, DeSmith looks to be in. Tierney is 29th in the 1,500 (4:37.44) when 21 were taken last year.

The 2019 NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held in Geneva, Ohio May 23-25.
