MEDFORD - Tufts Women's Cross Country senior tri-captain Natalie Bettez has been named New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Performer of the Week for the second time this season after her effort at the Connecticut College Invitational on Saturday.
Bettez, from Bolton, Mass., finished third overall and clocked a 21:23.2 time in the six-kilometer event. The Connecticut College Invitational had 25 teams partake and 307 runners finish the race. The Jumbo senior's third-place finish helped Tufts to place third as a team.
She has had a remarkable senior season that has included three first-place finishes including wins at the Bates Invitational on September 15, the Purple Valley Classic on September 22, and the All-New England Championships on October 6 in a race that featured all divisions. Bettez was the first Jumbo to win the All-New England Championship with her 17:57.85 time since Kathy Whitcomb in 1975.
This is the third time the senior has won the Performer of the Week award after winning it on September 24, 2018 and October 9, 2017. Bettez won the Purple Valley Classic the week of September 24th and placed 11th overall at the All-New England Championship last October. She is also a two-time U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Athlete of the Week this year.
The tri-captain was primed for her incredible senior season after a fantastic junior season as she was named to the 2017 All-NESCAC First Team and placed sixth in the NESCAC Championship. As a junior she also finished 78th overall (22:24.70) at the NCAA Championship as the Jumbos recorded a seventh-place finish. In her sophomore season, Bettez also earned an All-NESCAC First Team honor.
Bettez and the Jumbos will return to action on October 27 as they host the NESCAC Championships at Franklin Park in Boston.
