WILLIAMSTOWN -- The Tufts men's squash team traveled to Williams
College on Sunday for matches against the host Ephs and the
Middlebury College Panthers from the New England Smalll College
Athletic Conference (NESCAC).
Against Williams, the #10 ranked team in the nation at the end
of last season, the Jumbos lost 9-0. Several Tufts players were
very competitive in their matches. Sophomore Henry Miller
(Philadelphia, PA) won the first game 11-7 in the #5
match, while senior Scott Leighton (Summit, NJ)
won 26 points during his three-game loss in the #6 match.
Against #17 Middlebury, a Jumbo line-up missing top players
Ben Rind (Rockville, MD) and Alex Gross
(Washington, DC), who are both abroad, played a 6-3 loss
that was very competitive. Early on at #3, freshman Sheldon
Taylor (Atlanta, GA) added to the Tufts score with a
five-game win by controlling the left wall with a blazing backhand
and a number of hard-hit backhand crosscourt winners. Leighton had
a tight match at #6, but couldn't capitalize on a couple of
leads.
Miller at #5 was in fine form and controlled the game with a
powerful lefty forehand, winning in four. Senior co-captain
Max Dalury (Glyndon, MD) won his first game and
then the match as his opponent retired after straining his back. In
addition, tight matches were played at the top with Tufts' #1 and
#2, seniors John Subranni (Longport, NJ) and
Zach Bradley (Baltimore, MD) playing great
matches.
Coach Doug Eng's Jumbos (0-3) next play matches against MIT,
Boston University and Cornell on December 5.
