MEDFORD -- Sophomore Tiffany Kornegay (Carver,
MA) scored 12 points in the first half and junior
Colleen Hart (Needham, MA) added nine as the Tufts
University women's basketball team opened up a 26-point lead at
intermission and cruised to a 79-50 victory over Salem State
College on Tuesday night.
The game was the first for Tufts at the newly renovated Cousens
Gymnasium. Over the summer, the court was rotated 90 degrees inside
the 77-year old facility to meet the NCAA standard for length. The
Jumbos improved to 4-1 overall with their fourth straight victory.
The Vikings (2-2) lost for the first time in three games.
Tufts led 11-4 early with the help of two three-pointers by
Kornegay. Tufts was six for 12 from beyond the arch in the first 20
minutes overall. After a three by Salem's Erica Batchelder
(Stoughton, MA) at 11:23 made it 11-7, the Jumbos went on a 27-5
run over the next nine minutes. That gave the hosts a 38-12
advantage following two free throws by junior Shannon
Robinson (Foxborough, MA) with 2:24 on the clock. Hart
sank three three-pointers during the decisive stretch for Tufts,
who led 42-16 at the half.
First year Brianna Wilson (Lowell, MA) had four points and five
rebounds at the break for Salem. The visitors shot just 28 percent
(7/25) in the first half.
The Jumbo lead touched 30 (46-16) following a jumper by senior
Julia Baily (Farmington, CT) one minute into the
second half. The Vikings would only get as close as 22 points at
53-31 on a jumper by first year Rehama Stouble (Foxborough, MA)
with 13:43 to play in the second half. The margin in favor of the
Jumbos hit 30 again on a three-pointer by senior Katie Wholey (Marshfield, MA) at 9:50 and it stayed in the 30's
for most of the remainder. The largest lead was 35 points twice,
including 77-42 at 2:12 following a jumper by junior Sarah Nolet (Los Altos, CA).
Tufts had 15 steals on 23 Salem turnovers, including seven by
Kornegay and five by junior Vanessa Miller (Cincinnati,
OH). The seven thefts by Kornegay is the most by a Jumbo
since Valerie Krah swiped seven against Wesleyan on January 27,
2006. Twelve Jumbos scored points against Salem, with Hart's 15
leading the way and Kornegay totaling 14. Hart's four assists also
led Tufts, which had 16 total on 28 baskets. Eleven Jumbos
contributed to the rebound total, which was topped by five apiece
from Kornegay and sophomore Kate Barnosky (Huntington
Station, NY). The game featured the first collegiate
points scored by first-year Samantha Tye (Newton,
MA) and sophomore newcomer Dayorsha Collins
(Boston, MA). The Jumbos shot well everywhere at 47.5
percent (28/59) from the field, 50 percent from three-point
territory (9/18) and 82.4 percent (14/17) from the line.
Stouble scored on five of six field goal attempts and led the
Vikings with 14 points and six rebounds while adding two assists.
Brianna Wilson finished with 10 points and five rebounds while twin
Whitney Wilson (Lowell, MA) added six points, two rebounds and two
assists. Salem finished at 36.4 percent from the field (20/55),
including two for 11 (18.2 percent) on three-pointers.
Tufts travels to Colby-Sawyer on Saturday, while the Vikings
visit Plymouth State on Thursday.
