SOMERVILLE -- The #2 Amherst College Lord Jeffs netted two goals
in each half en route to a 4-0 win over the Tufts University Jumbos
in NESCAC men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Kraft
Field.
Amherst had early opportunities, but Tufts senior keeper
Pat Tonelli (Andover, MA) made consecutive saves
just two minutes into the match. Moments after a Lord Jeffs shot
hit the cross bar, Amherst would tally its first goal on a shot by
first-year Spencer Noon (Farmington, CT), his third goal of the
season, assisted by senior Matt Lewis (Wayland, MA) in the 16th
minute.
The Lord Jeffs would add another with just seven minutes
remaining in the half as first-year Jelani Rooks (Princeton, NJ)
scored his first career goal. First-year Robert Gooden (Atlanta,
GA) earned his first career point with an assist.
Amherst would pour it on in the second half as Tonelli initially
stopped a header from Noon, but junior Chris Linsmayer (Denver, CO)
would score on his own header to make it 3-0 Lord Jeffs in the 54th
minute. The Lord Jeffs would score its fourth goal with under seven
minutes remaining on Gooden's unassisted tally.
Tonelli played the entire contest for Tufts in net, allowing the
four goals on 11 shots, making three saves. Amherst sophomore
keeper Lennard Kovacs (Wolfersdorf, Germany) went the distance and
did not have to make a save on three Jumbo shots in the game.
Tufts, which has played three nationally-ranked opponents so far,
remains winless on the season at 0-3 overall and 0-2 in NESCAC
play. Amherst is now 2-0 in the NESCAC and 3-0 overall.
Tufts is back in action on Wednesday night at Springfield
College for a 7 pm match. The Lord Jeffs will be at Connecticut
College next Saturday afternoon.
