MALDEN -- Junior Tom Derosa (Charlestown, MA)
scored a hat trick with an assist to lead the Tufts University
hockey team's best offensive output in 31 games, a 7-1 non-league
victory over Suffolk University on Tuesday night at Valley Forum
II.
In addition to Derosa's four points, the Jumbos got two goals
and an assist from sophomore Evan Story (Shaker Heights,
OH). Freshman defenseman Trevor John (Grosse
Pointe, MI) and sophomore forward Matt Amico
(Buffalo, NY) each added a goal and two assists. Junior
forward Dylan Cooper (Colorado Springs, CO)
finished with three assists. The seven goals were the most by the
Jumbos since an 8-0 win against Johnson & Wales on January 6,
2009.
The victory stops a two-game slide for Tufts, who improve to
8-5-1 overall. Suffolk lost its second straight and fell to
5-8-2.
The Jumbos took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by
Derosa at 10:15 and Amico at 17:19. The hosts extended the lead to
5-0 with a trio of goals in the second period. Derosa figured in
all of them, assisting John's fifth of the year at 0:58, netting
his second of the game at 6:27, and then recording his first Jumbo
hat trick on a power-play at 13:59. Cooper assisted on each of
Tufts' second-period goals. Suffolk's Pat Welch (Dorchester, MA)
broke the string by scoring the Rams' lone goal of the night with
1:03 remaining in the second.
Story tallied both of his goals during a penalty-marred third
period. Amico earned assists on each of them. Story's second goal,
at 12:49 of the third, came on the power-play. The Jumbos finished
two for three with an extra skater in the game. Conversely, Suffolk
did not score on seven power-play chances.
The teams were whistled for 19 penalties in the third period,
including a game misconduct and three 10-minute misconducts.
Sophomore Scott Barchard (Reading, MA) started
in goal for Tufts and made 24 saves in 53:29 of action. Senior
Jay McNamara (Weston, MA) came on in relief and
made four saves while finishing up. Suffolk also used two goalies,
with junior Ryan Mula (Waltham, MA) starting and making 17 saves in
two periods. Freshman Carl Rappa (North Bellmore, NY) played the
third and stopped nine shots.
The Jumbos travel to play a NESCAC game at Bowdoin on Friday
night. Suffolk is at Western New England College on Thursday
night.
