WATERVILLE, Me. -- The Colby College men's hockey team is
unbeaten in the last 13 games after scoring early in each period as
the Mules took a 5-3 victory over Tufts University on Saturday at
Alfond Rink in New England Small College Athletic Conference
play.
Colby moves to 10-2-3 overall and is now 10-0-3 in the last 13
games. The 1961-62 Colby team has the all-time unbeaten streak
school record at 19 games (17-0-2). Tufts falls to 8-7-1 overall
and 4-6-1 in conference action.
The Mules scored in the opening 1:31 of each period to stay in
front for good. Mike Doherty (Lynnfield, MA) tallied just 1:02 into
the contest, but the Jumbos tied things up at 2:41 on a goal by
junior Zach Diaco (Rumson, NJ). Colby went ahead
2-1 at the first intermission when Tom McGinn (St. Albans, VT)
scored at 6:53.
Nick Kondiles (Lake Forest, IL) scored just 30 seconds into the
second period to make it 3-1 and then the freshman combination came
up with another goal when Michael Smigelski (Mountain Lakes, NJ)
tallied off assists from classmates Kondiles and Cory McGrath
(Yarmouthport, MA) at 16:38. Tufts cut the margin to 4-2 when
Mike Vitale (Brookfield, IL) scored with 2:07 to
go until the second intermission.
The early third-period Colby goal came from Jesse Lehman
(Atlantic Beach, NY) at 1:31. Tufts once again answered at 3:54 on
a score by freshman defenseman Trevor John (Grosse Pointe,
MI), but neither team managed a goal in the final 16
minutes.
Cody McKinney (Weston, FL) stopped 16 shots for the Mules, while
sophomore Scott Barchard (Reading, MA) had 30
saves for the Jumbos.
The Jumbos are off until hosting Castleton in NESCAC/ECAC East
crossover action next Friday night at 7 pm. Colby plays at
Middlebury College on Friday night at 7 pm.
