CAMBRIDGE - In a pair of matches played at Harvard University on Sunday, the Tufts men's squash team lost to Stanford 7-2 and to Williams 9-0. The defeats leave the Jumbos record at 1-5 after the first weekend of play.
In the first match, #20 Tufts was defeated by West Coast rival Stanford. It was the first win for Stanford over Tufts since 2002 when the Cardinal defeated the Jumbos early in the season before Tufts exacted revenge at Nationals. In the three-court system, Tufts fell behind early 3-1 as only junior Will Salisbury (New York, NY) at #8 played some of his best collegiate squash to win in three straight. Stanford opened up a 4-1 match lead before #1 Alex Gross (Washington, DC) added a win in four games. At that point, Tufts was behind 2-1 in games at #4 with Henry Miller (Philadelphia, PA), #5 with Andrew Kim (Wayland, MA) and #7 with Jeremy Ho (Reston, VA). Kim battled back, but lost a tight five-game battle despite being up 8-6 in the fifth.
Against NESCAC powerhouse and 11th ranked Williams later in the day, Tufts fell 9-0. The Jumbos took games in two matches, at #5 with Kim using his power game to take the second and at #1 where Gross used an attacking game to pressure his opponent.
The Jumbos are off until December 3 when they play Wesleyan.
