MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Wesleyan University (3-1) got the better of Tufts in a NESCAC men's squash match on Friday night that featured a number of close competitions. However, the Cardinals came away with a 9-0 victory.
The closest match was at the top, where Cardinal John Steele defeated Jumbo senior Alex Gross (Washington, DC) in five. Gross was up 2-0 before Steele rallied with three straight wins. The #2 match went four games, with Wesleyan's Matthew Candal breaking a 1-1 tie against Tufts senior Ben Rind (Rockville, MD) with 11-6 and 11-9 wins.
Though Cardinal Dale Kobrin won the third match in three, Tufts junior Hank Miller (Philadelphia, PA) was close as the final scores were 11-9, 11-8, 11-9. Even closer was the fourth match, where Jeffrey Berman defeated Tufts freshman Michael Abboud (Bronxville, NY) 13-11, 11-6, 12-10.
Tufts senior Andrew Kim (Wayland, MA) won the first game before losing the fifth match in four. Freshmen Tesfa Hailu (Boston, MA) and Jeremy Ho (Reston, VA) both extended their opponents in games during the sixth and seventh matches, respectively.
Coach Doug Eng's Tufts team (1-6) will play a triple-header on Sunday. The Jumbos play BU at MIT at noon, face MIT at 2 pm and play Boston College at MIT beginning at 4 pm.
