HARTFORD -- The Tufts University men's squash team saw its
five-match winning streak end at the hands of 10th ranked Williams
College on Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the
NESCAC Championships hosted by Trinity College. The Ephs, the
second seed in the conference championship, blanked the #7 seed
Jumbos 9-0. Later in the day, Tufts lost a loser's bracket match
against Amherst 6-3.
Coach Doug Eng's Tufts men had a solid performance against an
excellent Williams squad. Each of the top three matches went to
four games. Junior #1 Alex Gross (Washington, DC),
senior #2 John Subranni (Longport, NJ), and senior
co-captain and #3 Zach Bradley (Baltimore, MD) all
won a game in their matches and played competitively in their
losses. Senior co-captain Max Dalury (Glyndon, MD)
was also competitive in his three-game loss in the fourth
match.
Against Amherst, Tufts got a win at the top spot from Gross. He
was up 1-0 and led in the second game when his opponent withdrew.
Freshman Sheldon Taylor (Atlanta, GA) pulled out
the #6 match in five after letting a 2-0 lead slip away. He won the
match 11-9 in the fifth. Senior Scott Leighton (Summit,
NJ) played four games at #8 to win. Just two of the team's
six losses came in three games against the sixth-seeded Lord Jeffs,
who are ranked 18th nationally. Tufts is #19.
Coach Doug Eng's Jumbos (9-9) plays a final match at the
championship against Hamilton on Sunday morning at 9:00 am.
