Cup Bracket
HARTFORD -- For the second straight year, junior Alex
Gross (Washington, DC) of the Tufts University men's
squash team had a solid showing at the College Squash Association
(CSA) Individual Championships hosted by Trinity College. Last
season, Gross played in five matches and won three. This year, he
played in four matches and had two wins.
Playing in the Molloy Cup ("B" Division), Gross defeated
Middlebury College's Jay Dolan in an exciting five-game match on
Friday morning. The match went back-and-forth. Gross won the first
game 11-3, but Dolan bounced back with a 12-10 victory in the
second game. They split the next two, with Gross winning the third
11-2 and Dolan taking the fourth 11-5. Gross won the decisive fifth
game 11-7 to advance.
In the round of 32, Gross lost on Friday afternoon against
Princeton's Peter Sopher, who is the third seed in the Molloy
Bracket and received a first-round bye. The match featured close
competition, with Sopher prevailing 11-5, 11-7, 11-8.
Gross dropped into the second round consolation bracket and
faced Rochester's Joe Chapman on Saturday at 9:50 am. In another
back-and-forth match, Gross upset Chapman, who was the 14th seed in
the bracket. Gross won the first game 11-8, dropped the second
11-5, won the third 11-5, then was tied 2-2 in games after an 11-7
win for Chapman in the fourth. Gross earned the victory with an
11-8 final in the fifth game. In the consolation quarterfinals on
Saturday, Gross was defeated in four games by Rochester's Juan
Pablo Gaviria. Gross's lone win came in the second game as he lost
the match 11-7, 13-15, 11-4, 11-6.
This is the third straight year that Gross has competed in the
CSA Individual Championships. Last year he played into the
semi-finals of the consolation bracket. After losing his opening
match, he won three straight consolation matches before losing to
finish with a 3-2 record at the event. He won one out of three
matches as a freshman at the CSA Individual Championships in 2008.
With this year's results, he now has a 6-6 mark overall in CSA
Individual's play.
With two losses, Gross is eliminated from the competition. This
ends the 2009-10 Tufts men's squash season.
