MCGINN'S TWO THIRD-PERIOD GOALS HELP PROPEL COLBY HOCKEY TO 5-2 WIN AT TUFTS

Senior co-captain Andy Davis scored with three seconds remaining in the first period

MALDEN - Junior Tom McGinn (St. Albans, VT) scored a pair of goals 3:32 apart in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and lead the Colby College men's hockey team to a 5-2 victory at Tufts in a NESCAC game played at Valley Forum II on Saturday afternoon.

The victory was the fourth in a row for Colby, which improved to 6-8-1 overall and 5-5-1 in NESCAC. The Jumbos (4-10-1, 3-8 NESCAC) lost their eighth game in a row.

The contest featured up-and-down action with a combined total of 93 shots, and only eight penalties were whistled (seven in the third period). Host Tufts came out of the first period with a 2-1 lead on goals by seniors Tom Derosa (Charlestown, MA) and Andy Davis (Woburn, MA). The goal by Davis came with just three seconds remaining in the period. The Mules had taken a 1-0 lead early on junior Chris Buonomo's (Ediston, NJ) strike at 3:26.

Colby senior goalie Cody McKinney (Weston, FL) stopped all 17 shots that he faced in the second period when the Mules were able to tie the score at 2-2. Sophomore Nick Kondiles (Lake Forest, IL) put home a rebound for Colby at 3:16 of the second stanza. Jumbo junior goalie Evin Koleini (Buffalo, NY) also had a fine period with 13 saves, including a great stop on Mule freshman Ben Chwick (Purchase, NY) who was set up all alone out front.

With the score 2-2 heading into the third, McGinn gave the visitors a two-goal margin with his goals at 5:26 and 8:58. The Mules, who put 19 shots on net in the third, added a goal by Chwick at 18:10 for the 5-2 final.

Both goalies were busy. McKinney made 41 saves on 45 Tufts shots for his sixth win. Koleini faced 50 Colby shots and stopped 45.

In addition to McGinn, Kondiles had a two-point game for Colby with a goal and an assist. Freshman Jack Bartlett (Lynn, MA) and sophomore Scott Harff (Watertown, NY) both recorded two assists.

Tufts travels to Vermont to play Castleton next Friday night at 7 pm. Colby will host NESCAC rival Middlebury that night.
