RUTLAND, VT - The Tufts hockey team scored once in each period on its way to a 3-0 shutout of Becker on Sunday afternoon in the consolation game of the Rutland Herald Invitational at Spartan Arena.
The Jumbos got a pair of goals from senior Evan Story (Shaker Heights, OH) and a shutout from classmate Scott Barchard (Reading, MA) to get the win. Jumbo defenseman Jared Barker (Ridgefield, CT) was named to the All-Tournament team after recording three assists in two games.
The first penalty of the game proved to be costly for Becker, as Tufts converted with the man advantage at the 11:06 mark. Garret Sider (Longwood, FL) took the puck off the boards and found Barker moving from the left point to the middle of the ice. He fired a wrist shot at the net and Story redirected it past Jake Rosenthal (Wantagh, ONT) for the 1-0 lead.
The Jumbos added to their lead 6:49 into the second period when Blake Edwards (Columbus, OH) scored right in front of the net off assists from Dylan Plimmer (Phoenix, AZ) and Garret Sider (Longwood, FL).
Becker had multiple opportunities in the final 20 minutes, but Barchard was strong in net, turning away each attempt. The Hawks pulled Rosenthal with just over a minute remaining, however Story scored on the empty net with 58 seconds left to extend the lead to 3-0.
Barchard finished the afternoon with 35 stops between the pipes while his counterpart Rosenthal made 26 saves. Becker drops to 3-5 on the year and returns to action on Wednesday when the Hawks host Johnson & Wales at 7:40 pm.
The Jumbos improve to 3-2 with the victory and return to action on Friday when they host Williams in their home opener at 7 pm.
