WATERVILLE, ME - Senior Evan Story (Shaker Heights, OH) and freshman Tyler Voigt (Rochester, MN) both had a goal and an assist, and senior goalie Scott Barchard (Reading, MA) made 43 saves as the Tufts hockey team stopped a three-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory at Colby on Saturday afternoon.
Tufts pulled to an even 3-3 in NESCAC with the win, while improving to 4-5 overall. The victory earned a NESCAC weekend split for the Jumbos, who lost 5-1 at Bowdoin on Friday night. Colby, losers of two in a row, fell to 2-6 overall and 1-5 in the league.
Barchard stopped all 14 Colby shots in the first period and Tufts took a 1-0 lead on Story's third goal of the year with 2:45 on the clock. Assists went to junior Dylan Plimmer (Phoenix, AZ) and Voigt.
The host Mules evened the game at 1-1 5:18 into the second period. Tom McGinn scored his first of the year with assists from Brendan Cosgrove and Nick Lanza. However, the Jumbos would emerge from the period with a 2-1 lead after sophomore Garrett Sider (Longwood, FL) scored with 3:25 to go from Story. Barchard made 16 saves in the period.
While killing a Colby power-play early in the third, Tufts extended its lead to 3-1 with an unassisted short-handed goal by Voigt at the 3:42 mark. Barchard finished off his strong effort by blanking the Mules for the period with 13 saves. Colby finished with a 44-20 advantage in shots. Mule Matt Delaney made 17 saves in goal.
Tufts won at Colby for the first time in almost six years. They last had a 7-5 victory there on January 21, 2006.
The Jumbos resume the 2011-12 season at UMass Boston's Codfish Bowl on January 6 against Johnson & Wales. The Mules play next at Salem State on January 2.
