CAMBRIDGE - The Tufts men's squash team received victories from the top five spots in its order to secure a 5-4 victory over Georgetown University in the third-place game of the Conroy Cup at the College Squash Association Team Championships Sunday at Harvard.
With the win, Tufts finished 2-1 in the Conroy Cup division during the weekend to place third overall. The Jumbos finish their 2010-11 team schedule with a 9-16 record.
Senior captain Alex Gross (Washington, DC) had a dominating win at #1 for Tufts, surrendering just six points. Senior Ben Rind (Rockville, MD) and junior Henry Miller (Philadelphia, PA) were also sharp, winning in three at #2 and #3 respectively.
Senior Andrew Kim (Wayland, MA) and freshman Michael Abboud (Bronxville, NY) had to battle for their wins. Kim was down 1-0 and led 2-1 before winning his #4 match in five with an 11-6 final game. Abboud lost his first game at #5 before rallying to win three straight.
Two of the Tufts losses were in five games. Freshman Tesfa Hailu (Boston, MA) won the fourth game at #7 12-10 to force a fifth game, which went Georgetown's way 11-8. Freshman Ben Briggs (Sherborn, MA) led 2-1 for Tufts at #9, but Georgetown's Paul Reilly won the final two games to take the match.
The College Squash Association Singles Championships are next weekend (Mar. 4-6) at Dartmouth.
