SOFTBALL DROPS GAMES AGAINST MANCHESTER AND WISCONSIN-SUPERIOR IN FLORIDA

Junior Lizzy Iuppa scored for Tufts against Wisconsin-Superior

CLERMONT, FL - The Tufts softball offense struggled to produce on Tuesday as the Jumbos lost games against Manchester College and the University of Wisconsin-Superior at the NTC Tournament in Florida. The Jumbos lost the games 6-2 and 4-1, respectively.

Tufts fell behind Manchester 2-0 on a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first. The scored remained 2-0 until the Jumbos struck for two runs in the top of the fourth. First year 3B Kayla Holland (Attleborough, MA) led off with a single and moved to third on a double by first year catcher Jo Clair (Glastonbury, CT). Holland then scored on a wild pitch and Clair came across on a single by senior DH Izzie Santone (Madiston, CT).

The Spartans took the lead back quickly, scoring twice in the fourth. First year pitcher Janikka Tillotson had an rbi double and also scored on a single by senior CF Brittney Miller. With the help of two Tufts errors, Manchester sored twice again in the fifth to extend their advantage to 6-2 which is how it ended.

Other than the fourth inning, Tufts didn't manage much against Tillotson. She allowed seven hits and no walks while striking out two in seven innings. Miller finished 2 for 3 with a run and an rbi for the Spartans. Tillotson was also 2 for 3.

Three Tufts errors were costly, and half the Manchester runs were unearned. Jumbo sophomore Aly Moskowitz (Westfield, NJ) took the loss, allowing seven hits and three earned runs in 4.2 innings. First year Lauren Giglio (Niskayuna, NY) pitched 1.1 innings of no-hit relief. Clair finished with the lone multi-hit game for Tufts at 2 for 3 with a run.

The Tufts bats were silenced even more by Wisconsin-Superior's Amanda LeBard. She allowed just two hits and no earned runs with three strikeouts and no walks. An error, a single by junior 1B Lena Cantone (Southington, CT) and a sacrifice fly by Holland scored the lone Tufts run in the third.

Tufts was down 3-1 at that point. Senior 3B Kalli Kucharyski hit a two-run home run in the first inning and then came back to stroke a run-scoring single in the second. The Yellowjackets added a solo run in the fourth when junior RF Chelsea Jarzin bunted for a base hit and scored on a ground out by junior CF Taylor VanDamme.

Kucharyski finished 2 for 2 with 3 rbi and a run scored. Junior C Ashley Martin was 3 for 3 with a run at the top of the order. Jazin scored two runs and was 2 for 3.

Holland had the only other Tufts hit, a one-out single in the first.

Tufts has the next two days off befor returning to NTC Spring Games action on Friday.
