Jumbo Women's Basketball Bounces Back With 59-50 NESCAC Victory Over Colby

Box Score
Hayley Kanner tied for a team-high with 14 points in just 18 minutes of action

MEDFORD – Senior Kate Barnosky (Huntington Station, NY) and first-year Hayley Kanner (Scarsdale, NY) each poured in 14 points to lead the Tufts University Jumbos to a 59-50 NESCAC women's basketball victory over Colby College on Saturday afternoon at Cousens Gym.

The Mules scored the first five points of the game before Tufts scored its first point at the 16:32 mark. The Jumbos grabbed their first lead of the contest on a three-pointer by junior Collier Clegg (Evanston, IL), 10-7, with 12:02 remaining in the first half.

The advantage bounced back and forth between the two teams until the Mules re-gained the lead at 22-20 on a jumper by junior Diana Manduca (Portland, ME). Colby would extend its lead to 26-22 heading into the break. The first half saw three ties and six lead changes.

In the second half Tufts tied the game at 31 on a layup by senior Tiffany Kornegay (Carver, MA) at 15:07, and from that point on Colby never held another lead.

The Jumbo lead would extend to six on two occasions including the 9:23 mark, 42-36. Manduca then tallied a three-pointer and later a pair of free throws to get the Mules within three at 44-41, but that's the closest they would get.

Barnosky hit a three-pointer at the 3:18 mark that was answered by Manduca. Then Tufts junior Bre Dufault (Hampden, MA) came right back and hit a three-pointer of her own to help seal the game.

Kornegay was the third Jumbo to score in double figures as she finished with 10 points. She also led the team with seven boards. Barnosky was 6 for 12 from the field while Kanner was 6 of 11 to each score a team-high 14 points.

Manduca had a game-high 17 points for the Mules, shooting 6 for 13. Senior Jill Vaughan (Wareham, MA) dropped in 11 points with eight rebounds. Her classmate Aarika Ritchie (Lee, ME) finished the day with 10 points.

The Jumbos shot 42.1 percent (24/57) from the field and committed just four turnovers. The Mules out-shot Tufts at 42.6 percent (20/47), but the Jumbos scored 12 points off of 19 Colby turnovers.

Tufts is now 12-3 overall and 3-1 in NESCAC play. They will move out of conference Monday with a 2 pm contest at Wheaton. Colby falls to 10-2 (2-1) and will host Maine-Presque Isle on Tuesday at 6 pm.
