Gallegos' Late Third-Period Goal Lifts Tufts Hockey Team to 4-3 Victory Against Hamilton

Evan Story assisted on two goals for the Jumbos

MALDEN - Sophomore Kyle Gallegos (Westminster, CO) scored two goals for Tufts, including the game-winner with 2:52 remaining in the third period, as the Jumbos edged Hamilton College, 4-3, in NESCAC men's hockey action on Saturday afternoon at Valley Forum II.

Gallegos added an assist for a three-point game, while junior Dylan Plimmer (Phoenix, AZ) also scored three points for the Jumbos with a goal and two assists. Tufts improved to 6-6-1 overall and 4-4 in the league. Hamilton (7-6-1, 3-6 NESCAC) was led by a goal and an assist by sophomore Mike DiMare (Medford, MA).

The teams combined for six goals during a stretch of a little more than six minutes in the first period to get things started. The Jumbos jumped to a 2-0 lead as sophomore Garrett Sider (Longwood, FL) scored his sixth at 8:03, and Plimmer netted one with a man-advantage 49 seconds later.

Hamilton then had its own pair of back-to-back quickies to tie it at 2-2. DiMare's 10th of the season on a power play at 10:33 was followed 40 seconds later by junior Anthony Ruberto's goal.

The visiting Continentals took a 3-2 advantage when senior Anthony Scarpino (Meadville, PA) scored a power play goal at 14:03 of the second. However, just 34 seconds later, Gallegos capped the scoring in a wild first period to tie the score at 3-3. Shots were 15-13 in favor of the Jumbos after 20 minutes.

In the second period, it was the goaltenders' time to stand out. Tufts senior Scott Barchard (Reading, MA) saved all 10 shots put at him, while Hamilton's Joe Quattrocchi (Kanata, ONT) made saves on all nine Jumbo shots.

In the third, both teams killed three penalties each before Gallegos would notch the game-winner. He scored on assists from Plimmer and senior Evan Story (Shaker Heights, OH), who finished the game with a pair of assists.

Both goalies finished the contest with 30 saves, as Tufts earned a slim 34-33 margin in shots. Twenty-one penalties were whistled in all, with 13 against the Jumbos and eight for Hamilton. The Continentals were 2 for 9 with a man advantage, while Tufts was 1 for 6.

The Jumbos play a home NESCAC game next Saturday night against Trinity at 6:30 pm. Hamilton next hosts Amherst on Friday at 7 pm.
