CASTINE, ME - Junior co-captain Bre Dufault (Hampden, MA) led four Jumbos who scored in double figures with 16 points as the Tufts women's basketball team routed Middlebury College, 78-36, in the first round of the Fifth Annual Mariner Classic on Monday night. The Jumbos will face host Maine Maritime Academy in the tourmament final on Tuesday at 4 pm.
Tufts (8-2) never trailed Middlebury (3-5) in the wire-to-wire win, which opened the second semester of play for both squads.
Dufault hit 7 of 10 shots to go with six rebounds in her leading effort. Senior co-captain Kate Barnosky (Huntington Station, NY) posted 13 points and senior Tiffany Kornegay (Carver, MA) added 10. Junior Collier Clegg (Evanston, IL) delivered a dozen from the bench. Barnosky and first year Hayley Kanner (Scarsdale, NY) each pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, while Kornegay and Collier each hauled in six. Barnosky posted five assists, while Kornegay added four.
Middlebury got eight points from Tracy Borsinger (Chatham, NJ), while Maddie Moreau (Saratoga Springs, NY) contributed six points and four rebounds. Brittany Perfetti (Clifton Heights, PA) posted seven points, three assists and as many steals.
Tufts led the final 33:56, opening that stretch with a 9-0 run. The lead was in double-digits for the final 27:49. The Jumbos owned the glass, grabbing 48 rebounds to the Panthers' 23. Tufts turned 19 offensive rebounds into 21 second-chance points and scored 28 points on Middlebury's 18 turnovers.
The win is the eighth straight for the Jumbos, who had opened the year at 0-2.
