MIDDLETOWN, CT - Tufts won for the 14th time in its last 15 contests this season and extended its win streak over Wesleyan to eight games behind a 54-32 victory here today in women's basketball action. The Jumbos held the Cardinals to just 11 for 56 shooting (19.6 percent).
Tufts moves on to complete its road NESCAC weekend with a showdown at Connecticut College (13-2, 4-1 NESCAC) tomorrow while Wesleyan hosts Bates to close out its NESCAC weekend Saturday. Amherst leads the NESCAC with a 4-0 mark with Tufts (14-2, 4-1 NESCAC) and Conn tied for second.
Tufts outscored Wesleyan 22-9 over the final 12:52 of the first half to take a commanding 29-15 edge at intermission. The Jumbos got more than half of their first-half points from behind the arc, hitting five three-pointers, while finishing the game with seven treys. Tufts averages just over five three-pointers a game this season.
Tufts led by no less than 12 points in the second half and steadily edged the margin into the upper teens, then to as many as 24 points with 6:04 to go, 47-23.
Leading Tufts on the scoreboard were first-years Kelsey Morehead (Foster City, CA), Hannah Foley (Acton, MA) and Hayley Kanner (Scarsdale, NY), all with nine points. Foley had three treys on five tries. Senior co-captain Kate Barnosky (Huntington Station, NY) was tops on the boards with nine while Kanner had three of the Jumbos' eight blocks in the game.
Seniors Sam LaCroce and Eileen Gaffney were high scorers for the Cardinals with six points apiece. First-year Jess Cherenza had a team-best six rebounds.
