Coulthard's 37 Saves Backs Trinity College's 3-1 NESCAC Hockey Win at Tufts

Matt Amico scored Tufts' third short-handed goal of the season

MALDEN - Sophomore goalie Ben Coulthard (South Windsor, CT) made 37 saves to lead the Trinity College men's hockey team to a 3-1 victory in NESCAC play at Tufts on Saturday night at Valley Forum II.

Juniors Jeff Menard (Burlington, MA) and Jordon So (Toronto, ONT) both had a goal and an assist to offensively lead the Bantams, who are unbeaten in their last three games and are now 6-7-1 overall and 3-5-1 NESCAC. Senior tri-captain Matt Amico (Buffalo, NY) scored the only Tufts goal short-handed. The Jumbos dropped to 6-7-1 and 4-5 in NESCAC.

Both goalies were busy in the first period as the teams combined for 33 shots. Coulthard stopped all 17 that the Jumbos put at him. Tufts senior netminder Scott Barchard (Reading, MA) made 15 saves, but freshman Jackson Brewer (Newton, MA) put one past him at 11:03 of the opening stanza for a 1-0 Bantams lead.

Trinity expanded the margin to 2-0 just 1:18 into the second period on Menard's 10th goal of the season. Less than two minutes later however, the Jumbos closed to within 2-1 on Amico's first goal of the season while the hosts were killing a penalty. Both penalty-killing units played well throughout the second, with the Bantams and Jumbos both killing off four apiece.

So would score the critical next goal for Trinity at 13:49 of the third period to put the guests up 3-1. Coulthard saved all 13 shots that he faced in the third to make the margin hold up. Tufts pulled Barchard for the final 1:20, but with no results. The win for Trinity avenged a 4-1 season-opening loss to Tufts back on November 18.

Junior Chris Menard (Burlington, MA) finished with a pair of assists for Trinity, which was 0 for 3 on the power-play. Tufts could not convert on any of its six power-play opportunities. Overall shots were even at 38-38. Barchard finished with 35 saves.

Tufts is back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host Wesleyan at 3 pm. Trinity is at Connecticut College tomorrow at 3 pm.
