Freshman Hugo Meggitt played competitive squash in two losses
|
LEWISTON, ME - The #27 Tufts men's squash team lost a pair of matches in action at the Maine Round Robin tournament on Friday. Host and 18th-ranked Bates defeated the Jumbos 8-1, and #17 George Washington blanked Tufts 9-0.
Against Bates, freshman Alex Nalle (Philadelphia, PA) was the lone Jumbo winner. He battled back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Bates' R.J. Keating 11-6 and 11-4 in the fourth and fifth games at #2. Nalle played excellent high and tight length mixed with an aggressive front court game, which allowed him to control the T as he forced his opponent back and off balance.
Otherwise, the Bobcats won the other eight matches in three games. Freshman #1 Zach Schweitzer (Huntingdon Valley PA) lost by 11-9, 11-3, 13-11 scores. Classmates Hugo Meggitt (Princeton, NJ) and Elliot Kardon (Weston, MA) were also competitive. Kardon scored 21 points in the #9 match, while Meggitt earned 20.
Schweitzer's GW opponent, Islam El-Fiky from Egypt, was ranked 164th on the professional tour. The Jumbo freshman played creative, unpredictable tactics to keep his talented opponent guessing. In the three-game loss, Schweitzer fell by 11-9 and 12-10 scores.
Meggitt was again one of the more competitive Jumbos against George Washington, losing at #7 11-7, 11-9, 11-9. Sophomore Jeremy Ho (Reston, VA) scored 24 points in the #5 match.
Tufts, now 6-7 overall, plays in the NESCAC Championship next weekend at Trinity.
