MALDEN - The Tufts University hockey team exploded for six goals in the third period, including two by freshman Tyler Voigt (Rochester, MN), to earn a 6-1 victory over the Suffolk University Rams in a non-conference game at Valley Forum II on Tuesday night.
Prior to the third period, Tufts had been stonewalled by Suffolk sophomore goalie Cam Kelley (Brighton, MA). He did not allow a goal in the first two periods while making 15 saves in the first and 17 more in the second for a two-period total of 32.
The Rams, winless in 15 straight games entering tonight, had a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal scored by sophomore Jon Stauffer (Lansdale, PA) at 8:19 of the first period.
However, the tide turned strongly in the third. The Jumbos tied the score at 1-1 on a goal by freshman defenseman Shawn Power (Arlington, MA) at the 5:35 mark. The eventual game-winner came from another defenseman, sophomore David Carson (Avon Lake, OH), at 9:38 for a 2-1 Tufts lead.
Suffolk was then whistled for two penalties within nine seconds and the Jumbos capitalized. They scored a five-on-three goal by junior Dylan Plimmer (Phoenix, AZ) at 12:13. Just 37 seconds later, Voigt scored another power-play goal at 12:50 and it was 4-1 Jumbos.
Tufts added two more quick strikes late in the period to finish the scoring. Voigt's ninth of the year came at 17:21. That was followed 24 seconds later by freshman Derrek Schartz's (Plano, TX) goal at 17:45. The six goals are the most for the Jumbos this season.
Tufts had four players accumulate multiple points in the third. Along with Voigt's two goals, Power and Plimmer both had a goal and an assist each. Sophomore Kyle Gallegos (Westminster, CO), the reigning NESCAC Player of the Week, picked up two assists.
Kelly finished with 45 saves for Suffolk, which was outshot 51-30 in the game. Tufts senior Evin Koleini (Buffalo, NY) allowed the early goal and then was solid the rest of the way and finished with 29 saves.
Tufts (9-7-2), undefeated in its last four games, finished January with a 5-2-2 mark. They continue their NESCAC season at home on Friday against Connecticut College. Game time is 7 pm. Suffolk (2-16) plays next at Curry on Thursday night at 7:30 pm.
