Women's Basketball Sweeps NESCAC Opening Weekend With 66-43 Victory at Middlebury

Box Score
Co-captain Kate Barnosky's 14 points were the game-high

MIDDLEBURY, VT - Senior co-captain Kate Barnosky (Huntington Station, NY) scored 14 points and classmate Tiffany Kornegay (Carver, MA) added 12 as the Tufts women's basketball team improved to 2-0 in NESCAC with its 11th straight win, 66-43 at Middlebury on Saturday afternoon.

The Jumbos are now 11-2 overall after their second win against the Panthers in five days. On Monday, Tufts routed Middlebury in the opening round of the Mariner Classic at Maine Maritime Academy. Middlebury dropped its second straight NESCAC game as the Panthers fell to 3-8 overall and 0-2 in the league.

Tufts came out charging, taking a 13-2 lead in the game's first 5:54. A two from Middlebury's Scarlet Kirk and a three from Sarah Marcus cut the lead to 13-7 at the 13:10 mark. Tufts slowly extended its taking, earning its biggest margin in the first half of 15 points on a three from Kelsey Morehead (Foster City, CA) with less than a minute to go until the break. The Jumbos took a 33-21 lead into the intermission, forcing 13 turnovers.

Tufts led by 12 at the 15:34 mark of the second half, then went on an 8-2 spurt to take a 47-28 advantage with 10:40 left to play. Threes from Hannah Foley (Acton, MA) and Barnosky sparked the run. The Panthers came within 16 with 6:36 left to play, but that's as close as they'd get as the Jumbos pulled away for the 66-43 win.

Barnosky's game-high 14 points came on 5 for 7 shooting. Kornegay's dozen points was completmented by seven boards. Morehead scored nine and added four assists. After winning at Williams last night, Tufts swept its opening weekend of conference play.

Brittany Perfetti led Middlebury with 13 points, while Tracy Borsinger scored seven and Kirk had eight rebounds.

Tufts is off until hosting Bowdoin in NESCAC play at Cousens Gym next Friday (Jan. 13) at 6 pm. Middlebury also returns to action next Friday weekend with a NESCAC contest at Connecticut College.
