SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY - Tufts finished off a perfect weekend with a win Saturday in the final day of the 2012 Skidmore Women's Basketball Invitational. The Jumbos opened the day with a 46-38 victory over Hamilton.
Tufts is now 2-0 on the season, while the Continentals fall to 0-2.
In Saturday's opener, first-year Hayley Kanner (Scarsdale, NY) put up 13 points and six rebounds off the bench to lift the Jumbos to the victory.
The first half saw six ties and three lead changes, but a 6-0 run over the final 53 seconds gave Tufts a 25-21 lead at the break.
A layup from Hamilton's Samantha Graber cut the lead to two points at 25-23, but that's as close as Hamilton would get as the Jumbo defense held the Continentals to just 17.2 percent shooting in the second half (5/29).
Tufts pushed its lead to as many as 13 after a three-point play from Kanner at 9:26 made it a 39-26 game. Hamilton would get as close as seven after a Dani Feigin three-pointer with 28 seconds remaining, but it was too late as Tufts earned the 46-38 victory.
Kanner earned All-Tournament team honors for her big game and was joined by teammate Hannah Foley (Acton, MA) who finished with nine points and four rebounds. Junoir Ali Rocchi (Fairfield, CT) pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds as the Jumbos held a 46-33 advantage in rebounding.
For the Continentals, All-Tournament team selection Eliza Howe had a team-high 14 points and eight rebounds. Feigin chipped in with 11 points and Madie Harlem added seven points and eight rebounds.
This was a non-conference game between Tufts and Hamilton. They will meet again in NESCAC play for the final game of the regular season on February 8.
