Jumbo Women's Basketball Rolls Past Salem State for Fifth Win to Open Season

Kelsey Morehead went 3 for 5 on three-pointers

SALEM - Kate Barnosky (Huntington Station, NY) and Hayley Kanner (Scarsdale, NY) each recorded a double-double as the Tufts Jumbos cruised to a 74-45 victory over the Salem State Lady Vikings at Twohig Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

Baronsky scored 10 points and recorded 10 rebounds, while Kanner contributed 10 points, and 12 boards, along with three blocks to help Tufts improve to 5-0 on the year. Rachael Carter (Merrimack, NH) led Salem State (3-2) with 15 points and three steals in the loss. 

Tufts opened the game on a 9-0 run as Kanner and Hannah Foley (Acton, MA) combined for seven of the Jumbo points. Salem State finally ended the drought with a jumper by Sandra Lanier (Groton, MA), and quietly crept back to within three at the 10:51 mark following a three-pointer by Carter. However, after a trey by Salem State's Valerie Smith (Springfield, MA) made the score 21-16 in favor of the Jumbos, Tufts used a 16-5 run to end the half to pull away to a 37-21 halftime lead. Tufts took advantage of poor shooting by the Lady Vikings (5/25) from the floor and six points off the bench from Liz Moynihan (Storrs, CT) to build a 16-point lead at intermission.

The Jumbos opened the second half by outscoring the home team 23-6 to grab their largest lead of the game, 60-27, with just over eight minutes remaining. Kelsey Morehead (Foster City, CA) knocked in two threes and Ali Rocchi (Fairfield, CT) added a pair of baskets during the run, which saw Salem State go almost four minutes without scoring.

Morehead was 3 for 5 from the field for Tufts and finished with nine points and Foley added 11 as the Jumbos shot 7 for 15 from three-point range. Tufts out-rebounded the Lady Vikings 51-28, and grabbed 18 offensive boards to help the visitors hold a 21-3 edge in second-chance points.

Lara Bruni (Gloucester, MA) had eight points and five rebounds for the Lady Vikings, which shot just 27 percent from the field.

Tufts entertains Regis College at 2:00 pm Saturday at Cousens Gym. Salem State returns to the floor on Thursday evening when they host Plymouth State at 5:30 pm.
