LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - The Tufts men's squash team opened 2012 College Squash Association National Team Championships play on Friday with an 8-1 victory against MIT. The Jumbos advance in the winner's bracket and will play Georgetown in the Conroy Division semi-finals on Saturday at 3 pm.
The Conroy Division features teams ranked 25th through 32nd in the nation. Tufts is the top seed in the bracket as the #25 team. MIT was ranked #32. Georgetown, ranked 29th, defeated #28 Drexel 5-4 in the first round on Friday.
Tufts was dominant at the top of the order against MIT. In the #1 match, Jumbo freshman Zach Schweitzer (Huntingdon Valley, PA) won 11-4, 11-8, 11-6 against MIT's West Hubbard. Tufts took each of the top five matches in three straight games. Freshman #2 Alex Nalle (Philadelphia, PA) allowed 13 points in his victory, while senior captain Henry Miller (Philadelphia, PA) surrendered 14 in his #3 win.
The lone MIT win came in the sixth match, where Abhi Mitra defeated Jumbo freshman Gordon Silverman (Phoenix, AZ) in four. The match had been tied at 1-1. Tufts freshman Hugo Meggitt (Princeton, NJ) won a competitve seventh match in four games, including 14-12 and 13-11 scores.
Coach Doug Eng's Jumbos have won three straight matches heading into the tilt against Georgetown. They are 9-11 overall.
