HARTFORD - The Tufts men's squash team, seeded 11th in this weekend's 2012 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship, lost 8-1 to #6 seed Amherst College in the first round on Friday at Trinity College. Amherst is ranked 20th nationally and Tufts is #26.
The Jumbos (6-8) move into the consolation bracket, where they will face #7 seed Colby College on Saturday at 10 am at Wesleyan University. Tufts will also face #8 seed Hamilton College in a consolation match at Wesleyan starting at 2:30 pm Saturday. Amherst advances to the quarterfinal round, where they will play third-seed Middlebury on Saturday morning.
The lone winner for Tufts against Amherst was freshman Zach Schweitzer (Huntingdon Valley, PA) by scores of 11-9, 11-9, 11-8 in the #2 match.
In the #1 match, Jumbo freshman Alex Nalle (Philadelphia, PA) lost in five to Amherst's Scott DeSantis. Nalle won the first game 11-7, but dropped the next two before bouncing back with an 11-1 win in the fourth. DeSantis took a tight fifth game 11-9.
A pair of Jumbos also played competitively lower in the order. Freshman Hugo Meggitt (Princeton, NJ) scored 25 points in his #7 loss. Classmate Elliot Kardon (Weston, MA) tallied 24 points while losing in three at #9.
