BOSTON - The Tufts men's squash team stopped a seven-game losing streak in dramatic fashion on Thursday night with a 5-4 victory over Greater Boston rival Northeastern University.
Tufts struck early, with freshman Hugo Meggitt (Princeton, NJ) winning with steady play at #6 in four games after losing the first. Senior captain and #3 Henry Miller (Philadelphia, PA) won in three closely-contested games. At #9, Jumbo senior Eli Borek (Washington, DC) lost in a tough five-game match making the score 2-1 Tufts.
Freshman Gordon Silverman (Phoenix, AZ) played solid length to win for Tufts at #5, while at #8 freshman Elliot Kardon (Weston, MA) won handily to make the score 4-1 Tufts. However, Northeastern began a comeback with a win at #4 featuring excellent retrieving by both Tufts' Jeremy Ho (Reston, VA) and Northeastern's Max Kachur.
Northeastern won two very tight matches at #8 and #2, where Jumbo freshman Alex Nalle (Philadelphia, PA) was battling illness and a sore hamstring. That tied the score 4-4. At #1, Tufts freshman Zach Schweitzer (Huntingdon Valley, PA) fell behind 2-1 in games, but came battling back with very strong length and volleys. He wore out his opponent with long rallies to storm back, winning the fourth and fifth games by moving the ball around with pressuring length and drops as NU's John Ghublikian ran out of gas.
Tufts (7-11) finishes its regular season on Saturday with a 1:00 pm match against Boston College which will be played at Belmont Hill School.
