AMHERST - Junior Andrew Kurlandski had two goals and an assist to lead the ninth-ranked Amherst men's hockey team to a decisive 6-2 victory over NESCAC rival Tufts on Friday night.
Nine different players factored into the scoring for Amherst, with sophomore Mike Rowbotham dishing out three assists.
Getting the Jeffs off to a fast start, junior Brian Safstrom put the home team on the board just 4:35 into the opening period, tapping in a Rowbotham feed to the back post. Taking advantage of a power play opportunity, Tufts lit the lamp just 1:46 later when sophomore Tyler Voigt (Rochester, MN) tipped in his third of the year after a scramble in front.
Coming right back, Amherst regained the lead at 6:31 when senior Brandon Hew ripped a hard slap shot from the point past first-year goaltender Derek Metcalfe (Stoneham, MA). Capping off a frantic first 10 minutes, sophomore Andrew White (Rockland, MA) found open space in the slot, beating senior netminder Nathan Corey glove side to knot the game at 2-2.
On the power play with less than five minutes left in the period, senior Mike Moher corralled a rebound in front before sneaking the go-ahead tally past the goal line at 15:23 of the first.
Just 1:15 into the second period, freshman Topher Flanagan looked to extend the Amherst lead, taking the puck into the left corner before throwing a feed in front. Getting a stick on the centering pass, senior Nick Brunette deposited his second of the season into the back of the Jumbo net to make it 4-2.
Adding to the tally, Rowbotham handed out his third assist of the game 6:01 into the period, finding a charging Kurlandski on the left post. With just 34 seconds left in middle stanza, the junior forward buried his second of the evening, intercepting an errant pass in the neutral zone before skating in alone on the breakaway for the game's final score.
Amherst finished with a decisive 38-18 advantage in shots on goal, with Corey making 16 saves en route to his sixth victory. Metcalfe made 32 stops in the loss.
The Lord Jeffs return to action on Saturday against Connecticut College. Tufts travels out to Hamilton College to face the Continentals.
