BOSTON - Sophomore George Pantazopoulos (Milton, MA) netted a pair of third period goals, including the game-winner with 5:54 remaining, to lead Tufts to a 4-2 non-league college ice hockey victory over Suffolk Tuesday evening at Steriti Rink.
Pantazopoulos singlehandedly propelled the visiting Jumbos (6-10-2) from a 2-1 deficit entering the final frame to the triumph, as he converted feeds from freshmen Dom Granato (Pittsburgh, PA) and Keith Campbell (Newark, DE) in collecting the equalizer with 8:20 to play before netting the unassisted deciding tally just 1:26 later, as freshman Stewart Bell's (Marietta, GA) empty-netter with 25 seconds remaining accounted for the final score.
The host Rams (6-9-4) grabbed a 1-0 advantage with a minute to play in the opening stanza on junior Jon Stauffer's (Landsdale, PA) power play goal, and Suffolk extended that margin to 2-0 just 1:39 into the middle frame on sophomore Richard Woodworth's (Carlisle, MA) marker that came just two seconds after a man-advantage opportunity expired. Sophomore Andrew White (Rockland, MA) sliced Tufts' deficit in half with a power play goal on a five-minute major that came with 8:10 remaining in the second period, setting up Pantazopoulos's heroics in the closing minutes of action for the Jumbos.
Sophomore Blake Edwards (Columbus, OH) added a pair of assists in the win for Tufts, which also received a helper off the stick of senior Dylan Plimmer (Phoenix, AZ). Junior Wes Bonnell (Flenton, DE) and sophomore Dan Mazzei (Tewksbury, MA) set up Stauffer's marker in the setback for Suffolk, which also received a feed from freshman David Lazaro (Canton, MA) on Woodworth's tally.
Freshman Derek Metcalfe (Stoneham, MA) picked up his second victory of the season between the pipes for Tufts with a 32-save effort, while freshman Brian Jacobs (West Chester, PA) made 29 stops in his first collegiate start in the setback for Suffolk as the Rams outshot the Jumbos by a 34-33 margin for the contest.
Suffolk hosts Curry in an ECAC Northeast outing on Thursday evening at Steriti Rink that faces off at 7:25 p.m., while Tufts heads to New London, Conn. on Friday evening to take on Connecticut College in the front end of a New England Small College Athletic Conference weekend set that faces off at 7:00 p.m.
