Gallegos Scores Short-handed Goal to Give Tufts Hockey 3-2 Victory Over SUNY Canton

Derek Metcalfe earned his first college win in goal for Tufts

MALDEN - Tufts scored two goals a minute apart in the third period, including a short-handed tally by junior Kyle Gallegos (Westminster, CO), to come from behind for a 3-2 win against SUNY Canton in non-league men's hockey action on Saturday afternoon at Valley Forum II.

With the game tied 1-1 entering the third, the visiting Kangaroos took a 2-1 lead when sophomore J.R. Lafferty (Williamstown, NJ) scored on a power-play at 7:56. However, the Jumbos turned the game around with a goal by freshman Aidan Hartigan (Arlington, MA) at 13:11 and then Gallegos' short-handed eventual game-winner at 14:12.

Hartigan's goal was the first of his college career. The short-handed goal was the third in 10 games for Tufts, and it was the eighth goal this season for Gallegos.

The win stops a four-game losing streak for the hosts, who improve to 4-5-1 overall. SUNY Canton is now 5-12 after their second straight loss.

Tufts out-shot the Kangaroos 19-4 in the first period, but Canton sophomore goalie Morgan Barr (Almonte, ONT) made 19 saves and the game was scoreless after one period.

The Jumbos took a 1-0 lead when freshman James Randaccio (Williamsville, NY) scored at 11:39 of the second period. SUNY Canton tied it at 1-1 three minutes later with a score by senior assistant captain Chris Giczewski (Fountain Valley, CA).

Freshman Derek Metcalfe (Stoneham, MA) earned his first collegiate victory in the Tufts net with 21 saves. Barr finished with 43 for the Kangaroos, including 14 in the second period for a two-period total of 33.

The game was marred by 22 penalties, including a disqualification, two game misconducts, and two misconducts.

Tufts travels to play at Amherst in NESCAC action next Friday night at 7 pm. SUNY Canton is at Connecticut College next on January 22.
