MEDFORD - Sophomore Emma Roberson led four Jumbos who scored in double figures with 16 points as the #9 Tufts women's basketball team improved to 5-0 with a 76-50 win over Clark (3-3) on Sunday at Cousens Gym.
Hayley Kanner finished with 12 points, Caitlin McClure had 11 and Hannah Foley added 10 for the Jumbos. Tufts accumulated a 49-36 rebound margin, led by Foley's 11 for a double-double and 10 boards in 10 minutes by first-year Michela North.
Clark had three players score in double digits led by Aretha Sullivan with 12 and including 11 from Ashleigh Condon and 10 by Emily Reilly.
Three-pointers by Liz Moynihan, Roberson and Foley in the first six minutes helped Tufts get out to a 15-6 advantage. However, a 7-1 run by the Cougars capped by Condon's three pulled the visitors within 16-13 at 10:45. A pair of free throws by Condon at the nine-minute mark again made it a three-point Tufts advantage (18-15).
Tufts went up nine (26-17) on a traditional three-point play by Kanner at 5:52, but Gwyneth Ivory had three consecutive points for Clark keeping it a five-point game at 26-21 with 4:23 to go until halftime. Tufts would essentially put the game away in the final minutes of the first half, outscoring the Cougars 12-3 to lead 38-24 at the break.
Roberson scored seven of her 12 first-half points during that decisive stretch. Sullivan had eight points at the half for Clark.
The Jumbos scored the first five points of the second half to take a 43-24 advantage on a jumper by Kanner at 15:51. Clark didn't score its first points of the second half until Condon's jumper at 15:22 made it 43-26. That 17-point difference would be the closest the Cougars would get for the rest of the game. Tufts' lead peaked at 28 points three times.
As usual, Tufts showed good ball movement and control with 15 assists to 11 turnovers. Ali Berman recorded four assists and Kelsey Morehead totaled three. Moynihan finished with nine points, all on three-pointers, and six rebounds. North added three blocks. Ten players scored points overall for Tufts.
Esther Cohn finished with nine rebounds and two blocks for Clark, which was just 1 for 4 on three-pointers compared to Tufts' 7 for 24. Condon added two steals to her 11 points. Similarly, Clark also had 10 players in the scoring column.
This started a busy four-game week for the Jumbos, who next host Salem State on Tuesday at 7 pm. Clark welcomes Coast Guard for NEWMAC action on Wednesday at 7 pm.
