MEDFORD - A late second-half run propelled the #8 Tufts women's basketball team to a 63-44 victory over Connecticut College Saturday afternoon at Cousens Gym. Senior Liz Moynihan (Storrs, CT) was a spark off the bench and scored 13 points for the Jumbos.
The win was the eighth in a row for the Jumbos who go into winter break at 8-0 with their next game coming on December 30 at Hartwick. Junior Hannah Foley scored a team-high 15 points to go along with eight rebounds and three steals today.
Connecticut College fell to 4-4 and will host Coast Guard Tuesday at 6 pm. Senior Tara Gabelman scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down 12 boards. Senior Caitlin Cimino added 11 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Camels.
Both teams played back and forth for most of the first half until the Camels went on a 9-0 run sparked by six points from Gabelman to give the visitors a 23-14 lead with 4:45 left in the first half. The Jumbos would answer back on a 5-0 run of their own on a three-pointer and layup by Foley to close the gap, but would go into intermission trailing 19-25. Well-played first half defense by Connecticut College held the Jumbo offense to 26.7 percent shooting.
Down by six at the 17:08 mark of the second half, Tufts went on a 26-7 run for a 47-34 lead at 7:49. In that span, junior Kelsey Morehead (Foster City, CA) started the run with a three-pointer and Moynihan connected on three treys along with balanced scoring by the Jumbos. Tufts maintained a double-digit lead through the rest of the game with aggressive defense and made free throws down the stretch for the 63-44 final score.
Morehead added 11 points, six rebounds and two steals to the Tufts win while junior Hayley Kanner (Scarsdale, NY) tallied eight points, five rebounds and four blocks. Hannah Artner (Westborough, MA) collected seven rebounds off the bench. The Jumbos held a slight advantage on the boards 35-33, forced 17 turnovers and did not allow a made-three pointer by the Camels.
