HARTFORD - The Tufts men's squash team lost 8-1 to Wesleyan University in the first round of the NESCAC Championship at Trinity College on Friday. The victorious Cardinals are the sixth seed in the tournament and the Jumbos are 11th.
The lone Tufts win came from freshman Brandon Weiss (Phoenix, MD) in the sixth match. He outlasted Wesleyan's Raheem Logan in five games. In the back-and-forth match, Weiss won the first and third games before securing the win with an 11-6 final in the fifth.
Seven of the eight other matches were won by the Cardinals in three games. In the #9 spot, Jumbo junior Ben Briggs (Sherborn, MA) went four games before losing to Jason Brandner from Wesleyan. Briggs took the third game 11-7.
All of the higher seeds each advanced through the first round of the 2013 NESCAC Men's Squash Championship. With their win, the Wesleyan Cardinals punched their ticket to the quarterfinals for the third year in a row. They will face off against third-seeded Bates on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
The Jumbos (6-10) will play a pair of consolation matches on Saturday against Colby at 10 am and against Connecticut College at 12:15.
