Kanner Leads Women's Basketball to 68-48 Win Over Trinity

Box Score
Ali Rocchi went 4 for 7 from the field for the Jumbos

MEDFORD – Junior Hayley Kanner (Scarsdale, NY) went 7 for 10 and was the game's leading scorer with 16 points as the seventh-ranked Tufts women's basketball team picked up a 68-48 NESCAC win over Trinity College Saturday afternoon at Cousens Gym.

Junior Hannah Foley (Acton, MA) added nine points and a game-high seven rebounds, while senior Liz Moynihan (Storrs, CT) came off the bench and chipped in eight points, three rebounds and two assists. Kanner added four rebounds and three blocks.

Trinity falls to 10-7, 3-1 NESCAC and was led by Taylor Murtaugh and Hannah Brickley who each went 5 for 8 from the field for 10 points. Brickley added four rebounds and three assists in the losing effort.

With an 8-6 lead at the 15:07 mark, the Jumbos (14-0, 3-0 NESCAC) used a 13-2 run over the next six minutes as six different Tufts players scored in that span for a 21-8 cushion at 8:51. A jumper by sophomore Emma Roberson (Arlington, MA) with five seconds remaining in the opening half gave the home team their largest lead of 14 going into halftime 37-23.

The Bantams opened the half on a 6-0 run on baskets by Murtaugh, Mackenzie Griffin and Hannah Brickley to come within eight points (37-29), but that is as close as they would come as the Jumbos responded with a 7-0 run of their own when Moynihan was fouled attempting a three-pointer and Kanner and Ali Rocchi each hit jumpers. Tufts' lead would extend to 23 points on a trey by Caitlin McClure (Arlington, VA) with 4:51 remaining in the game and the Jumbos would go on for the 68-48 final.

The Jumbos held the edge in rebounding 36-34 and forced 18 turnovers. The Jumbo defense didn't allow a three-pointer and held the Bantams to 33.3 percent (17-51) from the field.

Tufts will host Emmanuel Wednesday at 7 pm. Trinity will take a week off before hosting Amherst next Saturday at 2 pm.
