Hockey Takes Codfish Bowl Third-Place Game from Suffolk 4-1

Box Score
Goalie Greg Jenkins was named to the Codfish Bowl All-Tournament team

BOSTON - The Tufts hockey team built a 4-0 lead and All-Tournament pick Greg Jenkins made it stand up in goal as the Jumbos won the third-place game of the 49th Annual Codfish Bowl 4-1 over Suffolk on Sunday afternoon.

Stewart Bell scored a goal with an assist to lead Tufts offensively helping the Jumbos improve to 3-8 overall. Jenkins, making his first start of the season, stopped 33 shots in the Tufts goal. The Rams dropped to 4-7-1 with the loss. The teams meet again in non-conference action Wednesday night at Tufts' Valley Forum.

The Jumbos put 19 shots on goal in the first frame and scored three times. Freshman Conal Lynch scored just 2:19 into the game to get Tufts going. Sophomore Andrew White follwed up at 7:39 and the Jumbos led 2-0. Bell then scored with two minutes remaining in the opening stanza and Tufts was in charge. White and Bell's goals were on power plays. Jenkins stopped all 13 shots he faced in the first.

Derrek Schartz scored his first goal of the season at 6:53 of the second period to put the Jumbos up 4-0. Dan Mazzei gave Suffolk some life with a goal at 8:03 reducing the Tufts margin to 4-1.

However, though five goals were scored in the first 28 minutes of the game, that would be it. The teams went the rest of the second period and all of the third without scoring. Jenkins made 12 saves for Tufts in the second and eight more in the third.

Suffolk starting goalie Brandon Smolarek was pulled after Schartz's goal in the second. He made 18 saves. Brett Roman also made 18 stops in his 31-plus minutes of relief goaltending for the Rams. Mazzei was Suffolk's representative on the All-Tournament team.

Tufts finished with a 40-34 advantage in shots. The teams combined for 23 penalties (12 by Suffolk) and 76 penalty minutes (43 by Suffolk).

Codfish Bowl host UMass Boston defeated Southern New Hampshire (SNHU) 6-2 in the tournament final on Sunday afternoon. The Jumbos had lost 5-4 in overtime to SNHU in the tournament opener on Saturday.
